ATHLETE FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH IS CHERYL SUNDEEN & JAY SUNDEEN!
Crossfit-AC athlete for the month of March is Cheryl Sundeen and Jay Sundeen, this is their story.
We are Cheryl and Jay Sundeen; the mother and son team that train with Dino at 3:00. Cheryl: “I have been up and down with my weight since my teens. I tried just about every diet out there. I would do great for awhile losing a bunch of weight only to eventually gain it back. I always exercised, but as they say, “It’s impossible to out train a bad diet.” Unfortunately, that is so true. The fatter I got, the more depressed I got, the more I ate. It was a vicious cycle. Four years ago our lives changed forever. We lost a great son and brother to what was ruled a suicide. I was in shock. I didn’t want to see anyone, go any where or do anything. I didn’t much think or care about anything, except for the loss of Nick. He will be forever 23, and he will always be my baby. I didn’t care if I was fat and unhealthy, all I cared about was that my life had changed forever. It’s one of those things that you think will never happen to you. I had the unspeakable happen to my family and I, so I self medicated with food and alcohol. A couple of years ago, I ran into my friend, Carla Michaud. She looked so happy and in shape. I asked what she was doing, and she told me about Dino and CrossFit AC. Weeks went by and I finally got up the courage to walk through the doors to meet Dino. He took me under his wing, giving me an eating plan and training me 3 days a week. I lost weight and felt great; and for that I am forever grateful. However, no matter how hard I try, bad memories come back to haunt me. The awful sight I saw that February morning is very clear in my mind. It never goes away. I found Nick with a gunshot wound to the head. The investigators couldn’t tell if it was accidental or intentional. Nick’s blood alcohol content was off the charts. My therapist told me I have symptoms of PTSD. I am now training with Dino 5 days a week. I tend to fall off the wagon occasionally; sometimes for weeks at a time. Dino is very patient, supportive, understanding and nonjudgmental. Thank you Dino, Francesca and Perry; I wouldn’t be where I am today without you. You are truly an awesome family. I love being part of CrossFit AC; I have meet some great people here!”
Jay: “Thanks for choosing us to be athletes of the month. I tried Crossfit a few years ago and it kicked my butt. I thought, “man this is hard!” I worked out on and off for years. I went to local gyms and did my own thing. I even set up a gym in my basement. I used mostly free weights to strength train, but very seldom did cardio. When life got busy my exercise routines went out the window. My mom has been coming to CrossFit AC for a couple of years now. She has definitely benefited from the Dino’s training. She often asked me to join. So, finally after looking in the mirror and “seeing a farm animal,” I decided to give it a shot. It’s definitely a lot easier to exercise now that I have a scheduled appointment. I have lost about 25 lbs since I started training with Dino. He is definitely a good buddy and I enjoy busting his butt. Thanks for everything!”
