ATHLETE FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PHYLLIS DUFF!
Athlete for the month of October is Phyllis Duff, this is her story!!
My story is pretty simple and probably similar to many of the other athletes – I was sick of my regimen of the treadmill, smith machines, and every now and again some dumbbell curls. My cousin Chris had recently started CrossFit Southie and I was intrigued with the style of workouts and the intensity. So I googled local CrossFit gyms and stumbled on AC. I remember coming to my first class and instantly being intimated but also very welcomed by the owner and trainers. I also remember leaving that same first CrossFit class and feeling like I was going to throw up. You would think that would make people drive out of the parking lot and never go back, but I couldn’t wait to get back to my next class.
I started working out at 5:30AM (shout out to my dirtys) religiously, and learning about Olympic lifts, metcons, isolated muscle groups, but most importantly I watched my body transform. Over the years, with the help of Dino and Perry, I went from barely able to do a pullup to muscle ups, barely able to lift a 35 lb. barbell to lifting my body weight over my head. The programming that AC does pushes you to build strength, endurance, and INTENSITY. The results you see within yourself build confidence and pride.
I could speak endlessly about the insurmountable #gainz we build here at AC, but the best part about this gym is the community. For the past, however many years its been now, I start my morning with the most dedicated and driven people. People that want to lift you up and see you succeed just as bad as they want to lift their new PR. And if you are an afternoon or evening person, you break up your day or end your day with that same community. I have met some of my best friends here, people I can’t imagine my life without. I consider Dino, Perry (machine of all machines), Francesca, and Vanessa family because they go above and beyond to make you feel like home when you are here. I love this gym and I am so thankful that I took a chance and took that first class.
